  • Welcome to Birdsong Photography

Sarah and Eric had an absolutely gorgeous intimate wedding in Key West, Florida a couple of months ago. And by intimate I mean it was literally just the officiant, myself,  and Eric and Sarah for this particular shindig.

We spent some time earlier in the day at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, which is gorgeous, then held the ceremony on Smathers Beach and caught the sunset which is never, ever a disappointment in Key West.

Then, as with all good beginnings to Key West stories, we decided to hang out for the rest of the evening on Duval Street. Frivolity ensued.

I heart you, Key West. I big, puffy heart you.

See.

What had happened was…

It wasn’t supposed to rain. Only it did rain. Right at the end of the ceremony before Jessica and Chris kissed. And not some wimpy little spring time rain, either. This was a full on heavy downpour, and we all ran back inside and laughed about it.

But in spite of the rain off and on the rest of the day, this was such a great, great wedding. I absolutely adore these two, and working with Erin with the Destin Bay House, Vaughn with Vaughn Vanamburg DJ, and Florals by the Sea is always wonderful.

Jessica and Chris, thanks so much for letting me be a part of your day. Even with the rain, it was perfect.

Sometimes when I talk to my couples about doing first looks, aside from the normal reasons of friends or family telling them the sky will fall and they’ll get warts all over their sensitive bits and a plague of locusts will come, I get the reason that they want it to still be special when the see each other walking down the aisle to each other.

Which I get. I do. But.

I can also say, from seeing a bazillion weddings that have done first looks, it’s still completely and totally a special moment, as evidenced by the amount of snot during Annie and Pacer’s first look, AND the amount of snot (mine included….maybe…) during the moment they walked down the aisle to each other.

Annie and Pacer got married out at the absolutely gorgeous Skelly Lodge in Catoosa, Oklahoma. It’s hands down my favorite location to shoot at in Oklahoma, and the people who run it are absolutely wonderful to work with. Special guest appearance at this wedding by one of my favorite DJ’s in the Tulsa area, Hugo with Lion’s Road. Never once has he failed to get the party started, even if that party is just me. #yolo

Annie and Pacer. I big puffy heart you both. Thanks so much for letting me hang out with you guys for this wonderful day.

Who will I be photographing?
What is your contact email?

I get a lot of people asking me if they can come shoot a wedding with me so they can see how and why I do what I do.

And the short answer to that is no, because you may secretly be batsh@t crazy, and if your crazy happens to fall out during the wedding of one of my clients, well, that would just be bad.

See? Ok then.

WHAT: The UnWedding workshop.

Walking through a wedding day from start to finish with yours truly, covering everything from getting ready to reception, client education before the wedding, contract basics, how to ignore most of the BS that makes up the wedding industry and shoot what matters, and how to do that cool long exposure sparkler shot I’m so fond of.  We’ll be shooting with a live (not dead) bride and groom model couple covering posing techniques, first looks, bridal party formals, and covering how to not piss off the wedding vendors you like, and successfully deal with the ones you don’t. Lots of photos, lots of hanging out with other cool creatives, lots of question and answer time, and more WeddingWire jokes than you can shake a stick at. (Seriously. Bring a stick and try it. Won’t happen.)

Sincere thanks to the beautiful and wonderful people at CG Pro Prints, Priscilla Foster Handmade Albums, Black Rapid Straps, and White House Custom Color for being willing to be seen with me in public and sponsor this shindig. All companies I love, trust, and work with regularly.

WHEN: Sunday, February the 28th from 3:00-7:00PM

WHERE: The absolutely gorgeous Skelly Lodge in Catoosa, Oklahoma.

HOW MUCH: $300.00 per attendee.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED: A sense of humor. Proper grammar. Something to take notes with. A camera. Your favorite portrait lens. If you have a wide angle lens, bring that as well. A tripod. A shutter release cord for your camera OR working knowledge of your camera’s self timer. Vodka.

Ok, maybe not the vodka. #yolo
